SAN stands for Subject Alternative Name that lets you protect multiple host names with a single SSL Certificate. SAN facilitates you to specify a list of host names to be protected by a single SSL Certificate. The purpose of a certificate with SAN is the same as that of other certificates. It provides a means for a server to establish its identity and then set up a secure communication. Certificates with SAN also provide a subject alternative name field that allows additional domain names to be protected with just one certificate.
SAN Certificates are often used for Unified Communications (UC) to secure Microsoft Exchange 2007 Server, Office Communications Server 2007, or Mobile Device Manager as well as server names, intranet, and .local names.
